Inspired by a love of nature, my aim as an artist is to draw viewers into my work. Colour and light are central to my paintings. The seasons, water and changing light all provide rich influences. My paintings are an emotional response to what I see, encouraging the viewer to find something different each time they look. I work mainly in acrylic paints which lend themselves to working quickly and expressively with a glorious array of colours.
I only started to paint seriously when I moved to Abu Dhabi with my family. The change in culture and scenery awakened a creative spark, and I knew I had to paint. The journey continued when I moved back to the UK and met Caroline Hulse at the JoeDaisy Studio. She became my mentor, inspiring me to take risks and grow as an artist.
I studied at the Open College of Art and have previously exhibited paintings and life drawings at Contemporary Art Fairs, Art Shed, The JoeDaisy Studio, The Maynard Gallery, Gravelly Barn, Art Van Go and various art shows. You can read more about my work in ‘On your Doorstep’ Magazine, issue 7, or discover my featured work in Sticks magazine.
Combing my love of travel with adventure, I am captivated by wide open spaces, dramatic coastlines and the everchanging skies above.
My paintings are composed of an extensive photographic library - a collection of cloud formations and textures taken directly from nature - with hours of observing how the light falls across the landscape.
This fusion of various elements builds the compositions, with paintings that tell stories of atmosphere and drama -journeys created to invite you in.
My favoured medium is oils. Their creamy, luxurious texture and deep colour pigmentations are perfect for the various methods I employ when applying to the canvas. Applied layers of coloured glazes ensure the final piece comes alive - just like turning on a 'dimmer switch' of 'light in nature'.
Concentrating on nature's seasons, my colour palette varies throughout my collection of paintings and between each land and seascape.
I continue to exhibit at premier art fairs throughout the UK.
Nick Logan graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2003 with a sell-out degree show. He paints in oils, draws in sanguine and etches/drypoint prints. He teaches from his home studio, life and portrait drawing and painting, for individuals and groups, recently at the Broadway Arts Festival.
I have developed a powerful and co-dependent connection with nature. This is probably down to the fact I turned to nature when growing up as a coping mechanism for dealing with the troubles and conflict in Northern Ireland. From wild, expansive spaces to places further afield, all share the same unspoken, quiet power. Nature is my safe haven; its richness and beauty have always been a constant in my life and form an important aspect of my self-identity.
Having a free and fluid mindset is as integral to my creative process as the act of makingitself. I use all manner of audio and fragrance-based rituals as small cognitive cues to helpme achieve a state of 'flow'. This helps me to work intuitively and intentionally on aconsistent basis
My paintings are highly sensory, with buyers often commenting how they 'disappear'mentally into my paintings for periods of time, often emerging wondering where they just travelled to. Each painting is developed over a long period of time. I work on building upsurface texture, working with marks and trying to ensure technical principles are adhered,to whilst painting freely and fluidly. Its this balance; the dialectic tensions between lightand dark, horizontal and vertical, colour and places for quite colour that speak to theviewer. Every painting speaks to me, and tells me what it needs, it's a subconscious andhighly rewarding relationship.
British artist Dan Holden has developed a unique style, using the materiality of rough oriented strand board (OSB) combined with the viscosity of layered oil paint, to convey a positive emotional energy through abstracted forms.
Dan also uses his distinctive handwriting style to communicate ideas by directly transcribing words on to his paintings. It was one of these pieces that Dan had accepted into the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
Dan is inspired by the sense of artistic freedom generated by the ground breaking artists of the 20th Century. He is constantly experimenting within the material confines he has set himself. When developing a piece, it can be a destructive process, sometimes eradicating an ordered image to emphasise layers and textures, and the passage of time. This results in each of his artworks, having a personal intensity and physicality, imparting a sculptural tactility.
Dan Holden (b. 1965) lives and works in Worcester. In 2016, he graduated with a First Class BA (Hons) in 20th Century Art from the Open University.
